So our quarter has begun, and I am sure the Antigone cast is busy getting 'off book.' This is the term for having one's lines memorized.
In the early part of rehearsals, actors usually do 'read-throughs' of the script--sitting around a table or standing in a circle reading their lines and getting a feel for the play. Then, they begin moving around in a space similar to the stage size with rehearsal props like chairs, tables, etc, but still may be carrying their scripts around. At some point, the director gives them a deadline to memorize their lines-or be 'off book.' At that point, rehearsals really start to move--quite literally, as blocking (stage movement patterns) is explored, fight scenes are choreographed, etc. unencumbered by the now well-worn little booklets.
So, cast---are you working on your lines? When might you be off-book?

We were scheduled to be off book Jan. 19th and have been pretty good about it. It's really hard because it's written in Iambic Pantameter or Prose and is not the way that we ourselves talk everyday. We're making significan progress though.
